This tutorial was done with PSP8   
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.   
It is my hope that you will take what I provide 
and do your own thing with it. 

 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro - Download a trial version   
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers

Remember to SaveOften  


Drag the arrow to mark your place

1.

Lets Begin

New Image: 400 x 400
File/Save As:  PussyWillow.pspimage

2.

 The Stalk

New Vector Layer: stalk

Preset Shapes Tool
Shape: Ellipse
Anti-alias: checked
Create as vector: checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 1

Foreground Style: Null
Background color: #846843 

Draw a long thin ellipse for the stalk

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to stalk to turn off 
the fill so you can see the vector outline and nodes


Click the top node
Tap the right arrow key 10 times

Click the bottom node
Tap the right arrow key 8 times

Click the left center node
Tap the left arrow key 6 times

Click the right center node
Tap the left arrow key 13 times

Adjust the number of times to move as needed for the desired shape

Tap the + key on the number pad 4-5 times to zoom in so you can see better
Click the bottom node
Move the control handle to the right a little


Click on the line segment next to the bottom node

Press and hold The Ctrl key as you move the cursor over the line segment 
to where you want to add a node
The cursor displays "+ADD"
Continue to press the Ctrl key and click the line
A symmetric node is added

Right Click on the node you just added/ Nodes/ Cusp

Note: cusp allows you to move either the control arm or 
control handle independently of the other


Adjust the end of the stalk so it looks like it has been cut off

Click on the top node and move the control arm and control handle inward slightly

Note: When you draw a vector object the nodes are set to cusp, 
but when you add a node it is set to symmetrical

3.

 The Buds

Note: I am writing this the way I did mine. However feel free
to use the Bounding Box and Rotation Handle to rotate and resize the buds
This is the way I did it so this is the way I write it

I have added a black background layer to make viewing easier

New Vector Layer: buds

Preset Shapes Tool
Shape: Ellipse
Anti-alias: checked
Create as vector: checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 1

Foreground Style: Null
Background Color: #EDE3D3

Tap the + key several times to zoom in

Draw a small ellipse for one bud

Click on the Rotation Handle and move it downwards slightly to turn the bud

Move it into place near the bottom of the stalk

Object Selection Tool
Right click on the bud /Copy [Ctrl+C]

New Vector Layer: temp
Right click on the canvas/ Paste New Vector Selection

Image /Mirror [Ctrl+M]

Object Selection Tool
Click on the new bud and move it into place
on the opposite side of the stem and just a little higher

Layer Palette
Click the + sign next to temp
Click on Ellipse and drag it down to the buds layer

Click back on temp to make it the active layer

Place the next bud
Image/ resize [Shift+S]

Note: I placed one bud on each side of the stem, 
then resized the next. Right click on the canvas/ Copy
This way I could keep the same settings for the resize.
I just used 90% each time.

 Saving As A PSP Shape - Optional

File /Save Copy As: PussyWillow-vectors.pspimage

Note: I always do this so I can go back and use the image later

Layer Palette
Make temp the active layer
Right click/ Delete

Make buds the active layer
Hold down the Shift key and click on each ellipse

Right click/ Group

Double click on Group 1 and rename it buds

Click the + sign next to stalk
Click on ellipse
Hold down the Shift Key and click on buds
Right click/ Group

Double click on Group 1 and rename it PussyWillow

File /Export/ Shape
Give your shape a name in the Export Shape Library
Click OK

5.

 Finish It Off

Edit/ Undo [CTRL+Z] 
Repeat until the buds are ungrouped and back on their own layer

Layer Palette
Right click on each Vector Layer/ Convert to Raster Layer

Make stalk the active layer

Magic Wand
Mode: replace
Match Mode: RGB
Tolerance: 0
Sample merged: not checked
Feather: 0
Anti-alias: not checked

Click on an empty spot on the canvas

Effects/ 3D Effects/ Drop Shadow
Offsets: 0
Opacity: 78
Blur: 5
Color: black

Selections/ Invert [Ctrl+shift+I]
Adjust/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur
Radius: 0.5

Selections/ Select None [Ctrl+D]

Make buds the active layer

Magic Wand
Click on an empty spot on the canvas

Selections/ Invert [Ctrl+shift+I]
Selections/ Float [Ctrl+F]

Effects/ 3D Effects/ Cutout

Offsets
Vertical: -1
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 78
Blur: 5
Color: black

Layer Palette

I deleted the black layer

Right click on one of the layers/ Merge/ Merge Visible

6.

 Tube That Sucker

File/ Export/ Picture Tube - Optional
