This tutorial was done with PSP7  
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.    

It is fine to make yours exactly as I did mine, but it is my hope that  you will do it your way and make it uniquely yours.


Paint Shop Pro - Download a trial version   
Eye Candy 3 -
zip file containing 
    LF_leaf-green-02.jgd, LF_leaf-green-03.jgd, 
    LF_leaf-green-04.jgd & LF_sky-earth.jgd 
Basic knowledge of PSP and layers

Remember to Save Often   
STEPS - These are the steps I used.

Drag the arrow to mark your place

1. Lets Begin
New Image 300 x 300 
File/Save As:  pineneedles.psp 

View/Change Grid and Guide Properties 
Units: Pixels 
Horizontal spacing: 100 
Vertical spacing:    100 
Line color: default 

Foreground color: null 
Background color: Gradient 
Style: Linear 
Angle: 0, 45, 90 
Repeats: 0 
Invert Gradient NOT checked 
I jumped around between the three gradients and the 3 angle settings. 

Preset Shape 
Flower 7 -  
Antialias: checked

2. Create The Tube
Place one flower in each section 
Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 

Width : 8 

Smoothness: 0 
Depth: 4 
Ambience: -30 
Shininess: 0 

Color: white 
Angle: 326 
Intensity: 50 
Elevation: 50 

Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow 
Vertical: 0 
Horizontal: 0 

Opacity: 60 
Blur: 3 
Color: black 

Effects/Plug-in Filters/Eye Candy 3/Jiggle 
Bubble size: 35 
Warp Amount: 44 
Twist: 99 
Movement Type: Brownian Motion 

You should have something like this 
File/Export/Picture Tube 
Cells across: 3 
Cells down: 3 
Name: pineneedles 
Accept the defaults in the other boxes.

3. Create A Tree
New Image 500 x 500 
File/Save As:  pinetree.psp 

Flood fill  with LF_sky-earth.jgd 
Angle: 0 
Repeats: 0 
Invert gradient: NOT checked 

Add a new layer 

Foreground color: Null 
Background color: pattern 
Phone Pole 
Scale: 100 
Angle: 90 

Preset Shape 
Antialias: Checked 

Draw a tall thin rectangle for the tree trunk 

Click on the Deformation Tool  
Hold down the CTRL key and click on the top right node. Drag the node towards the center until you almost have a point.  Right click to accept the deformation. 

Retouch Tool 
Type: Smudge 
Shape: Round 
Size: 10 
Hardness: 35 
Opacity: 80 
Step: 25 
Density: 65 

Round the bottom of the trunk slightly 

Add a new layer below the trunk 

Picture Tube  
Select your pineneedle tube 

Place some needles. 
I start out at 100% at the bottom, then change to 75%, and 50% as I move up the tree 
Add a new layer in front of trunk and add more needles 

4. Want A Lacier Tree
Just apply the Eye Candy Jiggle again on each needle layer
