This tutorial was done with PSP7   
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.    

It is fine to make yours exactly as I did mine, but it is my hope that  
you will do it your way and make it uniquely yours.

 
YOU WILL NEED
Paint Shop Pro  -     
Eye Candy 4000  -  trial version  
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers 
Color Palette if you want it

Remember to Save Often   
STEPS - These are the steps I used.


Drag the arrow to mark your place

1. Lets Begin
New Image 400 x 400 
Save as Owl.psp 
File/Save As: 
2. Body
New Vector Layer :  Body  
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #FAF5E0 
Preset Shape Tool : Ellipse 
Antialias: checked 
Create as vector: checked 
Draw a fat oval for the body 
 
Node Edit 
 
Convert to Raster Layer 
3.  Tail
New Vector Layer : Tail 
Foreground Color: #7D5335 
Background Color: #9B6B47 
Preset Shape Tool : ellipse 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Draw a small oval for the tail 
 
Node edit. 
Move this layer below the body layer 
Convert to Raster Layer 
4. Wings
New vector Layer : Wings 
Draw Tool  
Type: Point to Point Line 
Width: 1 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Close Path: checked 
Draw in a wing 
 
Still on this layer draw in the other wing 
 
Node edit as needed 
Convert to Raster Layer 
5. Head
New Vector Layer : Head 
Preset Shape Tool : Ellipse 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Draw an oval for the head 
 
Node edit as needed 
 
Convert to Raster Layer 
6. Eyes 1
New Vector Layer: Eyes 1 
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #FAF5E0 
Preset Shape Tool : ellipse 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Draw a circle for the outer ring around the eyes 
 
Draw another circle for the other eye. 
 
Convert to Raster Layer 
7. Ears
New Vector Layer : Ears 
Foreground Color: #7D5335 
Background Color: #9B6B47 
Draw Tool  
Type: point to point line 
Width: 1 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Close Path: checked 
Draw a wide squatty V 
 
Convert to Raster Layer  
Move this layer below the Eyes 1 layer 
8. Eyes 2
New Raster Layer : Eyes 2 
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #FFBA83 
Paint Brush  
Round 
Size: 60 
Hardness: 34 
Opacity: 100 
Step: 25 
Density: 100 
Adjust the brush size so it almost covers one of the eyes 
Click once over each eye 
9. Eyes 3
New Raster Layer : Eyes 3 
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #FFFFFF 
Paint Brush  
Round 
Size: 25 
Hardness: 60 
Opacity: 100 
Step: 25 
Density: 100 
Adjust the brush size as needed 
Click once for each eye 
10. Eyes 4
New Raster Layer : Eyes 4 
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #000000 
Paint Brush  
Round 
Size: 16 
Hardness: 60 
Opacity: 100 
Step: 25 
Density: 100 
Adjust the brush size as needed 
Click once over each eye 
11. Beak
New Vector Layer : Beak 
Foreground Color: Null 
Background Color: #EEC772 
Preset Shape Tool : diamond 
Antialias: checked 
Create as Vector: checked 
Draw in a beak 
 
Node edit as needed 
 
Convert to Raster Layer 
12. Branch
New Raster Layer : Branch 
Foreground set to: Pattern: phone pole 
Scale: 50 
Angle: 8 
Background Color: Null 
Draw Tool  
Type: Freehand Line 
Width: 24 
Line Style: Rounded 
Antialias: checked 
Draw in a limb for him to stand on 
Select and float your limb 
Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 
Use the preset Round except change shininess to 8 
13. Feet
New Raster Layer : Feet 
Foreground Color: #EEC772 
Background Color: Null 
Draw Tool  
Type: Bezier Curve 
Width: 4 
Line style: Rounded

Make Eyes 4 the active layer

15. Eyes 3 Detail
Make Eyes 3 the active layer 
Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 
Apply the default Soft Edge preset 
Merge these two eye layers 
Name the merged layer: Eyes 3
16. Beak
Make Beak the active layer 
Duplicate layer  
Select and Float the beak 
Effects/3D Effects/Cutout 
 
Make the Copy of Beak the active layer 
Use the Deformation Tool to make this copy of the beak slightly smaller than the one below. 
 
Merge the two beak layers 
Name the merged layer: Beak
17. Body Detail
Make Body the active layer 
Select and Float 
Foreground Color: #9B6B47 
Background Color: #C6B286 
Airbrush Tool  
Shape: round 
Size: 60 
Hardness: 4 
Opacity: 66 
Step: 20 
Density: 5 
Spray some shading on his body, darker around the edges and lighter in the center 
 
Effects/3D Effects/Cutout 
Offsets: both 0 
Opacity: 77 
Blur: 55 
Shadow Color: #663300 
Eye Candy 4000 - Swirl 
18. Feathers
New Raster Layer : Feathers

Make Wings the active layer 
Select and float 
Foreground Color: #7D5335

Spray some shading on his body, darker around the edges and lighter in the center.

20. Tail, Head and Ears Detail
Repeat step 17 for the Tail, Head and Ears layers 
except adjust the blur as needed
21. Eyes Detail
Make Eyes the Active Layer 
Select and Float 
Change Foreground Color to: #EEC772 
Spray around the edge 
Deselect  
Eye Candy 4000 - Jiggle 
with these settings 
 
Select and Float 
Effects/3D Effects/Cutout 
Offsets: both 0 
Opacity: 56 
Blur: 20 
Shadow Color: #9B6B47
22. Eyes 2 Detail
Make Eyes 2 the Active Layer 
Change Foreground Color to #FFBA83 
Paintbrush 
Size: 60 
Hardness: 25 
Opacity: 100 
Step: 25 
Density: 100 
Click once on each eye. 
I know, this is what we did earlier but I wanted this part larger so I did it again. 
Select and Float 
Effects/3D Effects/Cutout 
Offsets: both 0 
Opacity: 100

23. Eyes 2 More Detail
Change Foreground Color to #9B6B47 
Paintbrush 
Shape: Round 
Size: 40 
Hardness: 26 
Opacity: 52

Density: 52 
Click 1-5 times to add some shadow around the eyeball
24. Almost Done
Add a new Raster Layer  above the Body Layer 
Foreground Color: #7D5335 
Background Color: #9B6B47 
Airbrush Tool  
Shape: round

Hardness: 4 
Opacity: 66 
Step: 20 
Density: 5 
Spray mostly the light color under the inside edge of the wings and right under the head 
 
Select and Float 
Effects/3D Effects/Cutout 
Offsets: Both 0 
Opacity: 100 
Blur: 20 
Shadow Color: #7D5335 
Deselect 
Effects/Blur/Motion Blur 
Angle: 180 
Pixels: 5 
Turn off Layer 1 and the branch layer and merge visible 
Export as a Tube 
Turn on all layers 
add a drop shadows if you wish 
add a background and you're done
