This tutorial was done with PSP9   
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.   
It is my hope that you will take what I provide 
and do your own thing with it. 

 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro -  Download a trial version 
Color Palette
Brush Settings - needed in part 2
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers  

Remember to SaveOften
STEPS - These are the steps I used.


Drag the arrow to mark your place

1.

Lets Begin

New Image: 400x400
File/Save As: coon.pspimage
Open the color palette and keep it on the desktop
The colors on the left are the Foreground colors
The colors on the right are the Background colors
Where there is an X the style is Null

Open the Brush Settings and print them out for use when painting

2.

 Head

  New Vector Layer: head

Colors: body colors

Ellipse Tool [Q]
Mode: Draw Ellipse

Show Nodes: Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Line Style: +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Draw an ellipse
{101x136 to 261x262}

Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply

3. Muzzle
  New Vector Layer: muzzle

Colors: body colors

Ellipse Tool [Q]

Draw an ellipse
{151x235 to 1913x269}

Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit

Click on the right node
Tap the right arrow on the keypad 15 times
Tap the down arrow 4 times

Right Click on the right node
Node type: Cusp

Adjust the handle as needed

Click on the bottom node
Tap the down arrow 2 times
Tap the right arrow 2 times

Click Apply
4. Body 
  Active Layer: Raster 1
New Vector Layer: body

Colors: body colors

Ellipse Tool

Draw an ellipse
{118x188 to 289x343}

Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply
5. Ears
  Active Layer: body
New Vector Layer: left ear

Color: ears/mask

Preset Shape Tool: [P]
Shape: Triangle
Retain style: NOT Checked
Create as vector: Checked
Anti-alias: Checked
Line Style: +Solid
Width: 1.00

Draw a small triangle for the left ear

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit


Double Click on any node
Ctrl+1
Ctrl+2
Click on any blank space
Right Click on the top node/ Node Type/ Smooth

Image/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Left
Free: 30.00
All layers: NOT checked
Rotate single layer around canvas center: NOT Checked
OK

Layers/ Duplicate
Image/ Mirror [Ctrl+M]

Image/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Left
Free: 20.00
OK

Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on the ear and move it into place

Rename layer: right ear
6. Mask
  Active Layer: head
New Vector Layer: left mask

Color: ears/mask

Rectangle Tool [G]
Mode: Draw Rectangle

Show Nodes: Checked
Create On Vector: Checked

Draw a small rectangle for the left side of his mask
{118x215 to 160x242}

Image/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Left
Free: 35.00
OK

Click and hold the top corner node while moving the mouse toward the center


Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply

Layers/ Duplicate
Image/ Mirror [Ctrl+M]

Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on the right side of the mask and move it into place

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit


Click on one of the bottom nodes

Hold down the Shift Key and click on the other three bottom nodes
Tap the down arrow on the key pad 9 times
Tap the right arrow 10 times

Click on any blank space to deselect

Use the nodes to shape the mask as desired

Shape the left mask if desired

Rename this layer: right mask
7. Eyes
  New Vector Layer: left eye

Color: eyes/nose

Ellipse Tool [Q]
Mode: Draw Circle

Draw a small circle for the eye

Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply

Layers/ Duplicate
Image/ Mirror [Ctrl+M]

Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on the eye and move it into place

Rename this layer: right eye
8. Nose
  Active Layer: muzzle
New Vector Layer: nose

Color: eyes/nose

Preset Shape Tool [P]
Shape: Triangle

Draw a small triangle for the nose

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit

Double Click on any node
Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2
Right Click/ Node Type/ Smooth
9. Tree
  Active Layer: body
New Vector Layer: tree

Colors: tree

Rectangle Tool [G]
Mode: Draw Rectangle

Click the drop down arrow next to presets

Click the reset button


 
If you don't do this you will be drawing a rounded rectangle, because that is what we did last time

Draw a rectangle
{68x0 to 335x400}
Objects/ Convert to Path

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Draw Point to Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: Checked
Show Nodes: Checked
Line Style +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Place the cursor at {194x75} click mouse button
Move to {123x168} click
Move to {124x239} click
Move to {178x331} click
Move to {254x253} click
Move to {251x151} click
Move to {199x75} click

Right Click/ Edit/ Reverse Contour

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit

Click on the last node

Drag it over the top of the first node until you see JOIN

Double click on any node
CTRL+1
CTRL+2
Click on any blank space

Adjust the nodes as desired to make a nice hole in the tree

Shape the tree as desired

10. Paws
  New Vector Layer: left paw

Colors: paws

Ellipse Tool [Q]
Mode: Draw Ellipse

Draw a small ellipse
{145x292 to 168x313}

Image/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Right
Free: 55.00
OK

Objects/ Convert to Path
Click Apply

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit

Add 2 Nodes

Shape the ellipse

Click Apply

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Draw Point to Point - Bezier Curves

Show Nodes: Checked

Anti-alias: Checked

Background Style: NULL

Look at the screenshot
Place the cursor at #1
Click once
Move to #2
Click and hold the mouse button while moving the mouse in the direction of the arrow

Click Apply

Repeat two more times

Click apply after each line

Layer Palette
Click the + sign next to paws
Click on New Path
Hold down the Shift Key and click on New Ellipse
Right Click/ Group

Object Selection Tool [O]
Move the paw as needed

Layers/ Duplicate
Image/ Mirror [Ctrl+M]
Rename this layer right paw

Object Selection Tool [O]
Move the paw as needed
11. Tree Inside
  Active Layer: Raster 1
New Vector Layer: tree inside

Color: tree inside

Ellipse Tool [Q]

Draw an ellipse behind the opening in the tree
12. Optional Step
  File Save Copy As: coon_vectors.pspimage
 
This is something I do whenever I draw a vector image. This way I always have it so I can edit later if I want to change something.
