This tutorial was done with PSP8   
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.   
It is my hope that you will take what I provide 
and do your own thing with it. 

 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro  Download a trial version   
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers

Remember to SaveOften  
STEPS - These are the steps I used.


Drag the arrow to mark your place

This is a simple vector tutorial

Some people like having the coordinates I used so I will be including them in {brackets},
feel free to do your own thing. 
example: {95x50 to 265x165}
Place cursor at 95x50
Click and hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse until it reaches 265x265  
Release the mouse button to place the ellipse

A New Feature I am trying - To find out a word i.e. cusp just click on the link and a new window will pop up with more information.  I would appreciate your input on this feature

Lets Begin

New Image: 400 x 200
File/Save As:  bow.pspimage

DRAWING THE BOW

 The Tails

New Vector Layer: left Tail

Preset Shape Tool

Shape: Rectangle
Retain Shape: Not Checked
Anti-alias: Checked
Create as vector: Checked

Line style: +Solid
Width: 2

Foreground Color: #3E5842
Background Color: #77A17D

Draw a rectangle for the left tail
{10x60 to 180x150}

 The Bow

New Vector Layer: left bow

Preset Shape Tool
Shape: Ellipse

Draw an ellipse for the left side of the bow
{80x40 to 175x165}

 The Knot

New Vector Layer: knot
Preset Shape Tool
Shape: Ellipse

Draw a small ellipse for the knot
{170x80 to 220x135}

Object selection tool
Right Click on the knot/ Align Object/ Horz. Center In Canvas

 The Inside

New Vector Layer: left inside
Preset Shape Tool
Shape: Ellipse

Background Color: #507655
{80x120 to 170x160}

SHAPING THE BOW

 The Tails

Click the eye next to left inside, knot and left bow
to turn them off while you work on the tail

Make left tail the active layer

Object Selection tool
Click on the rectangle to select it

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Add a node in the center of the left end of the tail

Click on the new node
Tap the right arrow key on the keypad 15 times

Object Selection Tool
Click on the tail

Click on the Bottom Node
Hold Down the CTRL Key 
The rectangle should change to

Push the node upwards a little

Object Selection Tool
Click on any blank space to deselect

Layer Palette
Right Click on left tail/ Duplicate
Double Click on Copy of left tail
Rename: right tail

Image/ Mirror

This is all we are doing on the tails for now
we will come back to them later

 The Bow

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to left bow to turn it back on
Make left bow the active layer

Object Selection Tool
Click on the ellipse to select it

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to left bow
Notice the ellipse becomes an outline only, I find this easier to work with

Add a node on each side of the right node at about the spot the line crosses the line of the tail

Hold down the Shift Key and click on each of the three right nodes

Tap the right arrow key on the keypad 5 times
This lines up the edge of the bow with the edge of the tail

Click on the top node and tap the left arrow key 15 times

Click on the bottom node and tap the left arrow key 15 times
Click on the left node and tap the right arrow key 7 times

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to left bow to turn the view back on

Object Selection Tool
Click on any blank space to deselect

Layer Palette
Right Click on left bow/ duplicate
Double Click on Copy of left bow
Rename: right bow

Image/ Mirror

 The Knot

Layer Palette 

Make Knot the Active Layer
Click the eye next to knot to turn it back on

Object Selection Tool
Click on the knot to select it

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to knot 

Click on the right node
[nodes]

Left Click on the Control Handle 
and hold the mouse button while you pull up slightly
Release the mouse button to apply

note: I turned off the right bow and tail so you could see the node better 

Left Click on the Control Arm 
and hold the mouse button while you pull down slightly
Release the mouse button to apply

Do the same for the left side of the knot

 The Inside

Make left inside the active layer
click the eye to turn on the view

Object Selection Tool
Click on the ellipse to select

Use the rotation handle to rotate the ellipse slightly

Click on the Rotation Pivot Point and hold down the mouse to move the ellipse
Line up the ellipse with the bottom of the bow
Don't worry if it doesn't match perfectly we can fine tune it

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to left inside to turn off the view

Preview Palette
Click the 1+ to 3-4 times zoom in for a better view

Click on the left node
Tap the right arrow on the key pad 3 times

Pull down slightly on the Control Handle
Pull inward slightly with the Control Arm

Click on the right node
Pull the Control Handle Downward and to the left

Click on the top node and drag it to the left a little bit

Layer Palette
Click the eye next to left inside to turn the view back on

Object Selection Tool
Click on any blank space to deselect

Layer Palette
Right Click on left inside/ duplicate
Double Click on Copy of left inside
Rename: right inside

Image/ Mirror

Make Knot the active layer
Layers/ Arrange/ Bring to Top

 Details

New Vector Layer: left detail

Pen Tool
Create as vector: Checked
Mode: Draw
Segment Type: Line Segments
Line Style: +Solid
Width: 2.00

Background Color: Null

Mode: Switch to Edit
Right Click on the bottom node/ Node Type/ Curve After
Click on the Control Arm and pull it upwards slightly to make the line curve

Mode: Switch back to Draw
Click at another spot on the edge of the knot hold down the mouse button 
and move the line upwards again
Release the mouse button to place the line

Mode: Switch to Edit
Right Click on the bottom node/ Node Type/ Curve After
Click on the Control Arm and pull it downwards slightly to make the line curve

New Vector layer: right detail
Repeat the above steps and add two lines in the other side

**** There you have a basic bow****

You can Export It AS A Preset Shape
OR
Continue on to Page Two to add more detail and some shading
